Arriving with the NetBeans 6.1 release last week was the NetBeans IDE Early Access for PHP. This provides a complete PHP integrated development environment hosted in NetBeans, re-using the infrastructure NetBeans has already employed for Java and Ruby. Having walked through the main NetBeans IDE, I thought it worth looking inside the PHP update to see what it offers one of today's most popular languages.

This is not only a mark of prestige and status but places them in a position where large companies are ready to invest in the software as a platform for their projects. You can watch Rob lift up the grass skirt as he builds this application in a series of webcasts (currently up to Part 8). Rob is using the ASP.NET MVC framework and LINQ to SQL. The Storefront is a work in progress and Rob is actively soliciting feedback on what you want to see.

Though I am not a server or network administrator I have always been interested in learning how to secure a network. From some initial reading I learned that firewall is the starting point and trust me when I say that with Ubuntu 8.04 Server (code-named 'Hardy Heron') its seriously easy to setup a firewall.....

IMHO, this tenet applies perfectly in how UI should be designed. Typically, the most direct way to use a UI control should result in the most awaited feature from a user perspective (make the simple things simple). Then, some extra/hidden UI control facilities can be added to the control to support more in-depth scenario (make hard things possible).

The book does a great job balancing quick explanations of concepts, code examples, and insights into the implementation of Groovy. Even in chapters on topics I'm familiar with, I found myself impressed with everything Venkat found that I hadn't seen before. So the book is great, now let's talk about edge cases...

Being a C# developer by trade, I naturally spend a lot of my working life programming computers. Whilst I by no-means profess to be a “guru” of any kind, I do notice that there is one aspect of software development that is often neglected from discussion, and most programmers will hopefully agree with me as I explain.

After four days of ASP.NET AJAX training with Stephen Walther I set out to learn more about my options in choosing a solution for a JavaScript/Ajax framework. If I realized days later I would be writing this comprehensive post on 7 of the most popular frameworks, I may have just went with the "Inny-Minny-Miney-Moe" method! I decided to share my research, analysis, links, resources, and personal grade for each of the frameworks compared - jQuery, YUI, Prototype, Dojo, MooTools, Ext JS, and Script.aculo.us.
